Resident Austinites are highly engaged and focus much of their attention on the well being of their city. A highly popular campaign, “Keep Austin Weird” is an effort to preserve local small businesses commonly threatened by national retail rivals. Health and wellness is another shared sentiment among locals as they participate in the “Austin in Motion” program – Mayor Will Wynn’s effort to make Austin the fittest city in the nation. Much pride is taken in the appearance of the city as well – a focus first introduced by one time resident Lady Bird Johnson, who initiated beautification efforts alongside the Colorado Riverfront. Along with a commitment to the welfare of the city, Austinites also know how to have a great time. The city plays host to two of the largest and most recognized music festivals in the country – South by Southwest and Austin City Limits – which bring diverse acts of up-and-comers to well known arena caliber artists. That’s not to mention the renowned nightlife found on Austin’s famous 6th street – a strip of restaurants, bars and clubs that brings out a melting pot of cultural tastes exciting people watching. Sports fans have much to enjoy as well with the University of Texas Longhorns taking on the rest of the Big XII conference in Baseball, Football, Basketball and many other sports. There’s even Zilker Park where residents take in the jogging trails, kite festivals, rugby tournaments, or refreshing dip in Barton Springs Pool. With so much going on, it’s no wonder the Lone Star State makes Austin its capital. The rest of the country seems to notice as well, considering Austin was recognized as the #2 Best Big City in “Best Places to Live” by Money magazine in 2006. And with the city continuing to grow, the future for Austin looks to really come into full bloom. A thriving nightlife, wonderful natural resources and residents who truly care about where they live, Austin truly has it – and it doesn’t take a downtown Austin realtor to let you know that. R.
